The greening of Rue des Carmes, eagerly awaited as part of the city's restoration plan, is coming to fruition in the heart of the city with the arrival of spring 2023.

Rue des Carmes, which connects Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Saint-Ouen Abbey Church, will be transformed into a “plant nave”. The project consists of the installation of metal arches covered with climbing plants along the facades, between Notre-Dame and Rue aux Jews. These arches will be covered with climbing plants such as Chinese wisteria, bignone, clematis, Japanese honeysuckle, etc.

The installation of these arches is planned between Monday March 27 and Friday April 7, followed by planting from April 11 to 15. Tree planters of different shapes will be arranged in a staggered manner on the section located between rue aux Jews and rue de l'Hôpital. These improvements are planned to be installed next fall.

The greening of Rue des Carmes will have multiple benefits for the city of Rouen and its citizens. First of all, it will improve air quality by absorbing part of the pollutants emitted by vehicles. It will also help regulate the temperature of the street, cooling it during hot periods. In addition, it will increase biodiversity by creating new habitats for insects and birds. Finally, it will provide a more pleasant living environment for citizens and visitors to the city, by creating a green and peaceful space in the heart of the city.

Let us know your thoughts on this greening! We can't wait to see what you think!
