The Maison Sublime, discovered in the depths of the Palais de Justice in Rouen in 1976, is a monument of great historical and cultural importance. This residence, dating from the beginning of the XNUMXth century and built of limestone, is the oldest vestige of the Jewish presence in France. Its location, a few meters from Rue aux Jews, bears witness to the history of the Jewish community of Rouen in the Middle Ages.

Although only the lower room and the beginnings of the walls of the ground floor are visible today, archaeologists estimate that the Sublime House originally had three levels: a basement, a ground floor and a floor. This Romanesque building, once located in a courtyard or garden set back from the street, reveals valuable clues about Jewish life during this historical era.

The discovery of the Maison Sublime highlights a little-known part of the history of Rouen, testifying to the cultural exchanges and communities which have shaped the historical richness of this emblematic city. By visiting this treasure of architecture and history, you will have the unique chance to step back in time and immerse yourself in the fascinating past of the Jewish community of Rouen in the Middle Ages.

Sublime house visited on Saturday February 17, 2024 with Gaetan, a wonderful guide who knew how to take us back in time and put the history of Rouen in its place over the centuries. It was a real enrichment, thanks again to him. Future gift ideas for our children and grandchildren.

Very difficult to visit because there are a lot of delays, but the wait is definitely worth the trip, between the history of Rouen and the Jewish community and the part of mystery about the history of this house, an instructive visit

Exciting one and a half hour visit thanks to the dynamism, enthusiasm and teaching of our guide Gaëtan. He has the art of clearly revealing the history of this construction while evoking the history of this district of Rouen. To advice !

Group visit on Tuesday, December 13 morning with a top-notch tour guide! Reservation to be made before arrival. Super interesting and captivating visit to this mysterious place, rediscovered underground not so long ago. Great discovery for the whole group and absolutely worth doing with a guide in order to properly understand the history and context of the Middle Ages! It lives up to its name, this house is 'sublime'!
