It was in the center of an ancient square in the French town that Joan of Arc was burned to death on May 30, 1431, during the Hundred Years' War. The square was the usual place for executions. A large cross is notably placed on the site of the old pyre.

Pierre Corneille was initially baptized in the old Saint-Sauveur church located in the middle of the square. While excavations at the square have revealed some of the remains of the ancient church, it is now located near a nearby museum.

The Place du Vieux-Marché is located at the end of Rue du Gros-Horloge, a square entirely made up of half-timbered or half-timbered houses, typical of the city of Rouen. It is pedestrianized and paved with stones, making it a popular place to eat and drink as well as being home to the oldest French inn: La Couronne.

The square is full of restaurants and bars which is now a lively place.
